Q: Do I need to scratch/crack it before using this rosin?

A: You can just apply to the bow, about 5-10 times up and down. For new rosin, you can also use a file to slowly and gently scrape the surface for easier attachment to the bow.

Q: How to store & care for your rosin?

A: Rosin should be always be stored at room temperature, most violinists store their rosin in a compartment of their violin case so it’s easily accessible. It’s also a good idea to keep your rosin in its case or pouch to prevent it from leaving rosin flakes in your case.

Q: Is light or dark rosin better for my violin?

A: Violin and viola tend to use a harder light rosin while cello use a medium sticky dark rosin, and double bass use an even stickier dark rosin, but this isn’t a hard-and-fast rule. Climate is the major factor in choosing a rosin. If you live in a hot, humid area (or are going to play in a hot, humid space), a lighter rosin is generally the way to go. Darker rosins are extra-sticky. When applied to your bow hair, they provide a good deal more grip than light rosin. This can be problematic in hotter environments, but it’s perfect in dry and cool places. Light rosin will still work in dry places, but the difference in grip is definitely noticeable.
