1. When I play, the pitch of my hulusi doesn’t change at all. Is it broken?

Covering all seven holes, gently blowing to hear a consistent “gurg~~~” sound. Increase force until it shifts to a deeper “so,” marking the maximum airflow. For higher notes, ease the airflow. Follow the fingering chart for “Do Re Mi Fa So La…”

2. My fingers can’t fully cover all 7 holes; the hole spacing is too small for me to play properly.

Hulusi, invented by China’s Dai minority, has smaller hole spacing due to their smaller physique. Fixed for each pitch, covering all 7 holes can be challenging, a major hurdle in learning. Adapt and embrace the Dai people’s gentleness and romance.

3. Why is the tone of my hulusi inaccurate, and the sound not good?

Use finger pads, not tips, to cover holes. Prevent air leaks. Maintain proper blowing intensity (consult fingering chart). Avoid “gurg” sounds before/after notes (refer to “TO blow” and “double TO blow” tutorials).

5. Do I need to open the two small subsidiary pipes while playing?

Typically, the two small subsidiary pipes should remain completely closed. These subsidiary pipes are used in faster sections of music, and if they need to be opened, there will be clear notations in the hulusi sheet music.
